Habitat Monitoring and Research
The Tulalip Tribes conducts research and monitoring throughout the Tribes’ Usual and Accustomed areas across the Puget Sound Region to better understand the ecological systems which allow for the traditional resources to thrive, to better understand the changes that are impacting and harming the ecological systems, and to figure out the best ways to protect, preserve, and restore the ecological system which supports the Tribe’s culture and health.
Recent and ongoing habitat research and monitoring activities include:
- Marine Survival Study
- Plankton sampling
- Monitoring of restoration and recovery at the Qwuloolt site
- Railroad Stream Crossing
- Assessing small stream utilization by juvenile Chinook salmon
- Evaluating outmigration of juvenile salmon in the Snohomish Basin using smolt traps
- Researching habitat characteristics within the Snohomish Estuary most utilized by juvenile salmon species
- Surveying adult Chinook and Coho salmon (spawners) returning to the Skykomish, Snoqualmie and Snohomish river basins
